Here’s one more reason to add Tunis, North Africa’s most European capital, to your must-visit list: Villa Didon. The whitewashed hotel—which stands atop Byrsa Hill and has views of the ruins of Carthage, Queen Dido’s city, below—is the work of French architect Philippe Boisselier. Each of his 10 pared-down suites (all named after figures from Greek and Roman mythology) is hidden behind a futuristic electronic sliding door. Inside, Portuguese linens are draped over whimsical Ron Arad– designed chairs; a tan marble floor leads to a center-of-the-room whirlpool bath, where you can soak while admiring the Gulf of Tunis through huge windows. A hammam, a lobby bar, with stone monochrome etchings and vibrant raw-silk banners by Algerian artist Rachid Koraïchi, and a sleek restaurant, with an open kitchen and views of the bay, turn the whole retreat into a modern classic.
