Seven One Seven
Of all the grand 18th century merchants’ mansions on this stretch of the Prinsengracht canal, the one that makes you want to live there most is the very one that gives you the opportunity to shack up. The only hotel along this section of the canal, Seven One Seven’s eight rooms and suites boast the kind of appointments that have a Stendhal Syndrome-like effect on avid readers of The World of Interiors: custom blended paints in rich matte finishes, heavy Belgian linen drapes, sisal flooring, refined colonial antiques mixed with rough-hewn Flemish pieces, and enormous brass beds dressed in gray wool blankets and baby-soft white linen. There’s a lovely breakfast room and garden, two cozy living rooms, and an eggshell-blue library stocked with titles in several languages. The staff skews to young, hip men who are walking poster boys for the city’s coolest sites and haunts.
Insider Tip:
Late afternoons and evenings, there’s beer, wine and hors d’oeuvres service in the fire-lit living room and library; go for the wines, which are invariably excellent South African vintages.
