Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa

This cluster of adobe-style buildings, perched on the north slope of the eponymous red-rock mountain, was originally developed as an exclusive tennis resort back in the 1950s. For decades, the property was a haunt for tennis stars and celebrities—including Ken Rosewall, Dean Martin, and Elton John—and its complete refurbishment in 2001 has only made it swankier. Now the 105 sleek casitas are airy, modern sanctuaries with travertine baths, sumptuous goose-down-plumped beds, and breathtaking mountain views from enormous windows. There’s still terrific tennis here, on five championship Deco-turf courts; but there are plenty of quieter pursuits too—like meditation and yoga classes, and Asian-influenced healing treatments (Thai reflexology, aquatic Watsu-pool massage) in the expansive spa.
