Periscope
The periscope mounted on top of this 21-room boutique hotel in elegant Kolonaki means even the ground-floor bar gets an aerial view of Athens (displayed on a TV screen). The entire hotel is an ode to the city, with black-and-white photos of the metropolis on the ceilings or walls of rooms—all modern-minimalist, hardwood floors, and shades of cement. The attention to detail—complimentary flip-flops instead of slippers, room numbers made from periscope knobs—is most evident in the penthouse suite, which has a private deck with Jacuzzi, lounge chairs, and views of the Acropolis. Breakfast is served in the bar, but for lunch and dinner you’re expected to explore the posh neighborhood. The second Saturday in December, Haritos Street turns into a block party with free drinks and live music.
