NHow

35 Via Tortona
Milan, Italy
TEL: 39-02-489-8861

In the buzzing Tortona area of Italy’s industrial capital, Matteo Thun’s 249-room Nhow hotel—housed in a former factory—features a revolving showcase of contemporary art and furniture from Edra, Kartell, and other all-star design companies. There are witty, irreverent touches everywhere, from the graffiti-tagged guest-room doors to the chandelier/sculpture in the restaurant, which mimics the form of a giant iridescent orchid. Art is front and center throughout: one reaches reception via a concrete-columned tunnel where projections and temporary exhibitions are installed, and the hotel maintains a separate gallery Web site dedicated to the works—by the likes of David LaChapelle and Hans Hartung—on display in its halls.
