There’s a new crop of luxury hotels in Tokyo, and one of the most impressive is the Mandarin Oriental, in Nihonbashi— a business district in the northeastern part of the city. Occupying the top nine floors of a stunning tower designed by Cesar Pelli, the hotel has views that make the city look like one big Lego project. From 500 feet up, tiny toy cars whiz along video-game streets. Wherever you are—whether in one of the four restaurants, the high-tech fitness center, or the elaborate spa— oversize windows put the megalopolis in grand perspective. In the 179 rooms, neutral colors and ebonized wood furniture upholstered in beige chenille provide a soothing backdrop. The sophisticated design is inspired by nature: bedspreads are patterned with a fallen-leaf motif, and illumination from Echizen paper lampshades evokes moonlight.
