Mama's Fish House

799 Poho Place
Paia, HI, United States
TEL: (808) 579-8488

On its own coconut-grove cove on the island’s northern shore, Mama’s has been one of Maui’s most celebrated restaurants since it opened in 1973, but it still feels like a secret thanks to a private beachfront setting. The interior is like an old South Seas beach house, with bamboo walls, thatched ceilings, Polynesian art, and huge flower arrangements. Fresh fish is brought by boat daily (fishermen are credited by name in the menu), and depending on the catch, you might find tender ono (wahoo) combined with mahimahi, and ahi in a spicy coconut curry sauce or succulent fried moi over Asian veggies, lychees, and prawns in a black bean sauce. But the star, always on the menu, is the lobster-and-crab-stuffed mahimahi baked in a macadamia crust.

Insider Tip:

Arrive before sunset for the spectacular ocean views, and ask for a table closest to the beach.
