Plaka

Magna Grecia Hotel

54 Mitropoleos St.
Athens, Greece
TEL: 30-210-324-0317

Rooms in this 1898 former residence with ornate Rococo embellishments are romantic Belle Époque fantasies that fly in the face of minimalist chic. Even the location—opposite the Mitrópoli cathedral on the border of Plaka, with a pedestrian street on one side—is steeped in old Athens. Six of the 10 rooms (all named after Greek islands) have Parthenon views, as does the rooftop breakfast terrace, which is enclosed in winter, allowing for coffee with a view year-round. With its tiny elevator and winding staircase, this is more of an inn than a hotel, but rooms have the requisite amenities (TV, DVD, AC) and fill up quickly, so book in advance.

Rooms to Book: Mykonos and Zakynthos, the largest doubles, with views of the Acropolis.

Insider Tip:

The entrance is hidden between a rug store and pharmacy in a Neoclassical building opposite the cathedral: tell the taxi driver to take you to the Mitrópoli, then have him pull forward past the church; the door is on your right.
