Luna Lodge
Carate, Costa Rica
TEL: (888) 762-4069
When Lana Wedmore came to Costa Rica 30 years ago, she knew she wanted to move there. Purchasing 150 acres of tropical wilderness on the Peninsula de Osa, she erected a lodge and eight thatched-roof bungalows. Each has its own covered deck out front and is usually free of insects because of a constant light breeze and cooler temperatures at its location above the Carate River Valley. Guests have the opportunity to surf, fish, kayak, and pan for gold. Tours are also available of the forest with special attention to bird watching.
Room to Book:
To be closer to nature, rent one of the cheaper nature-lover platform tents with two single beds and a balcony overlooking the canopy of the rain forest.
Insider Tip:
Private taxis are available from the nearest airport at Puerto Jimenez, but it’s far cheaper to travel by colectivo transport, which leaves from the bus terminal area at 6 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every day.
