Lori-Avan Dzoraget Hotel

Lori Province, Armenia
TEL: 374-10-547-888

A tourism boom has come to Armenia, and a network of stylish places are replacing stoic Soviet hotels. The Lori-Avan Dzoraget Hotel—one of the three Heritage Hotels owned by James Tufenkian, the New York–based founder of Tufenkian Artisan Carpets—epitomizes the country’s entry into luxury-level hospitality. The three-floor, 34-room mountain retreat rests on the cusp of the Debed River in the northern region of Armenia, rimmed by imposing rock formations and a maze of rivers and forests. The medieval castle-like hotel in many ways exemplifies the colorful clash of the old and new currently found in central Asia: the interior is furnished with contemporary pieces and Armenian rugs from Tufenkian’s extensive supply, but you can still step outside and watch shepherds herding their flocks just beyond the driveway.
