For visiting artists, royalty, and romantics, this modernized 19th-century hotel is the address to commit to memory. Opulence reigns, from the Venetian chandeliers in the banquet hall and the mahogany and cut-glass entrance of the dining room right down to the Karl Fazer chocolates at turndown. Suites are commonly reserved well in advance: the Mannerheim, regally outfitted in teak and purple-and-gold fabrics; the Kämp, with floral settees, silk valences, and a deep marble soaking tub. Twenty-first-century touches have appeared, now that Starwood has taken over, but if service and style from a bygone era appeal, there's no other place in town.
