Occupying an elegant Victorian mansion, Grano de Oro is a welcome departure from San José’s many cookie-cutter business hotels and budget hostels. Refitted with plush appointments such as decorative dark-wood ceilings, ornate fountains, and Italian tile, the inn has a rooftop garden terrace, 32 rooms with four-poster wrought-iron beds, sumptuous fabrics, and en suite bathrooms with whirlpool tubs. The inn has a pleasant courtyard restaurant and is set in a safe, quiet area that’s within easy walking distance of cafés, theaters, and shops. If you have to stay in San José, this is the way to go.

Insider Tip:
