Hotel Fauchère
Located in the town of Milford, Pennsylvania, 75 miles west of New York City, the Hotel Fauchère has long been a getaway for boldface names. Charlie Chaplin, Andrew Carnegie, and Babe Ruth have all laid their heads at the 1880 inn, originally opened by Louis Fauchère, once a master chef at the famed Delmonico’s in Manhattan. Though the hotel pays homage to its long history (note the vintage European menus in the restaurant), it is very much a 21st-century hideaway. Owners recently completed a five-year renovation that preserved original decorative touches such as chestnut floors and a walnut- and-mahogany banister. By contrast, the 16 guest rooms are contemporary retreats, with rain showers, radiant-heat floors, and Frette linens.
