Hale Ohia Cottages
Surrounded by 60-year-old botanical gardens and just a mile from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, this property makes use of a circa-1931 home and outbuildings. The four main lodge rooms and four small cottages—one the former gardener’s residence, another the former water-tank structure—are filled with mid-century Hawaiian antiques and resemble ship’s quarters for their creative use of space and cozy nooks for reading or board games (books and games provided). Outside, a small Japanese soaking tub sits under mammoth tsugi pines, and nearby lava viewings are a popular activity; ask friendly owner-manager/architect-designer Michael Tuttle where and when to go.
Room to Book: The Hale Lehua, the oldest of the cottages, was the property’s original study, and it still feels like one with its wood shingle exterior and lava-rock fireplace.
Insider Tip:
It gets a bit chilly at night—ask for one of the three cottages with a fireplace.
