Crafted from a row of 17th-century houses, Hacienda Puerta Campeche brings a dose of urbane style to this historic colonial town. Most of the 15 guest rooms have 18-foot ceilings, a bathroom the size of a big-city apartment, and a sun-drenched daybed. Pools built between the red and yellow façades of the old manor houses flow through porticoes from room to room. It’s the perfect base camp for day trips to nearby cultural sites, including the town of Becal, where you can watch local artisans, working in caves, as they stitch Panama hats. The hotel can even arrange private moonlit tours of the ruins of Edzna, a pyramid complex that dates from 600 to 300 B.C.
