Design students can take several lessons at this unique boutique hotel by Florentine architect Guido Ciompi just north of the duomo. Behind the Art Deco friezes on the building’s façade lie 21 individually decorated rooms and suites sporting Wengé wood floors, ebony furniture, and bright African fabrics and animal skins. Two suites have private workout rooms, two others steam rooms, and several more suspended beds. The hotel’s first-floor restaurant, Le Noir, proves its name with black lacquer tables and velvet upholstery offset by illuminated tables.

Make sure to ask for a room away from the street unless you enjoy the sound of beeping cars all night.
