Athens’s landmark hotel is a local legend. During WWII, a busboy saved Winston Churchill’s life by disarming a bomb in the basement. And every actor who ever played James Bond has stayed here, as have royalty and various heads of state. It’s the very definition of a grand hotel, with white-gloved valets, soaring ceilings, priceless antiques, crystal chandeliers, cloudlike bedding and marble baths, and a full spa with an indoor pool and steam rooms. But the jewel in the 321-room hotel’s crown may be the uninterrupted views of the Acropolis and the 1896 Olympic Stadium from the rooftop bar and restaurant and of Mount Lycabettus from the rooftop pool. The central location is perfect—opposite the Parliament Building and overlooking Syntagma Square.

Rooms to Book: Those that end in odd numbers have exterior views (most other rooms face the interior atrium café); room 606 and the balconies of suites 614 and 714 look onto the Acropolis and the Parliament Building.

If breakfast (served at the Roof Garden restaurant) is not included in your rate, skip the 37-euro morning buffet and take a quick stroll to the more reasonably priced cafés in the enormous, modernized Art Deco Citylink shopping complex.
