Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa
Sonoma, CA, United States
TEL: (707) 938-9000
This sprawling, opulent resort, set just a few miles north of downtown Sonoma, might as well be its own private island; its vast array of on-site amenities could lead you to completely forget about the surrounding wine country. It’s the only property in the region, for instance, that boasts a 177-acre championship golf course; there’s also a 40,000-square-foot spa offering a lengthy menu of mineral-water and ayurveda-themed treatments; a fitness center; an expansive outdoor pool; tennis courts; two restaurants; and a rambling Spanish mission–style compound housing 226 rooms. These are decorated in French-country fashion—white-painted furnishings, toile fabrics, marble baths—and some have wood-burning fireplaces and views over the palm-shaded gardens. Others have balconies or patios—but there’s not a vineyard in sight. You can decide if that’s a good or a bad thing.
Room to Book: Ask for a Mission Suite, with a four-poster bed and Saltillo tilework (and skip the Harvest and Cabernet suites, which overlook the driveway, street, and special event area).
Insider Tip:
The Fairmont is one of the few area hotels that doesn’t have a strict two-night minimum policy on weekends. (Be sure to ask when you book, though.)
