he Spanish colonial buildings of the Alta Hotel cascade down a lush hillside above San José, coming to rest at the deck of a brilliant blue, glass-tiled oval pool. The views from the guest rooms take in the city below, the surrounding affluent expat neighborhood of Escazú, and on clear days, the Pacific in the distance. The 23 rooms feature balconies or garden-level patios and all the expected amenities of a resort, but the hotel feels more charming boutique than big-name anonymous: the tiered lobby serves as an art gallery and hosts monthly wine-and-cheese receptions with local artists.
