Scrolling through Instagram, you might think travel has become all about visiting dreamy destinations like Bali and Iceland, but according to a new report the hot spot to travel to right now is *drum roll* Oklahoma.
Specifically, vacational rental booking site HomeAway found that Broken Bow Lake in Oklahoma, Spirit Lake in Iowa, and Hill Country in Texas are the most up-and-coming destinations for Americans traveling domestically.
“Last year’s unexpected new favorites for vacation home rentals ... were near national and state parks,” Karen Fuller, HomeAway’s senior director of global market research, said in a statement. “The trend continues with this year’s surprise destinations, which are all in beautiful outdoorsy places.”
As HomeAway noted, travelers to these destinations are bucking traditional accommodations like hotels and resorts in favor of renting out entire homes, or even more exotic abodes like tree houses, barns and boat houses.
“Travelers renting homes on beaches and mountains are a mainstay of the vacation home rental industry,” said Fuller. “But as more and more travelers rely on HomeAway and VRBO, it’s interesting to see their preferences evolve. I would not have predicted a demand for treehouses.”
Of course these unique spaces aren’t limited to just Oklahoma, Iowa, and Texas — and most certainly aren’t your typical barns and treehouses either.
Take, for example, this renovated red barn in Woodstock, Vermont that sits directly over its own babbling brook and can easily accommodate 6-8 people. Or this barn in the heart of wine country in Sonoma, California. Its tranquil setting is the perfect spot for a quiet cup of coffee before a day filled with wine tasting.
And if you’re not quite ready to give up hotel life just yet, there are plenty of unique and amazing hotels waiting for you to explore all around the world.
