Though its sweeping beaches and charming colonial architecture recall mainland Cape Cod, Nantucket—which lies just 30 miles offshore—has a blustery island spirit all its own. Over the past decade it's become a major destination for sea- and scene-loving big-city crowds (and the swanky retailers and restaurateurs who cater to them)—but outside of town are the island’s windblown, starkly beautiful dunes and moors, which feel almost as remote as they must have a hundred years ago.
