• Taj Hotels, Resorts & Palaces, India One of the largest luxury hospitality groups in South Asia, Taj is also among the most socially progressive companies on the planet. With 56 properties in 39 locations in India and more around the world, the company is rigorously devoted to supporting the local communities surrounding its hotels. Ten years ago, Taj launched EcoTaj, a philanthropic program that reflects the company's active involvement in social development and environmental issues in India. Operating in urban centers that are rife with poverty, EcoTaj has successfully marshaled the incredible resources at its disposal to aid hunger-relief efforts, education, health crises, fund-raising, earthquake relief, and income generation for underprivileged women. One of the most impressive feats of EcoTaj is its enormous employee participation program. In the past year, Taj employees have logged 300,000 hours of volunteer work. Hotel staffers train local women in housekeeping and food preparation to help them become economically independent. Another program places kitchen staff in charitable homes and hospitals to assist in food production. Other employees lead vocational-training workshops in electrical work, carpentry, and baking. Demonstrating a commitment that is "broad and deep," according to juror Niki Leondakis, Taj has made an enduring impact on communities throughout India. www.tajhotels.com
