Cheap Flight Day,” one day each year from August 21 to 23 when flights supposedly go on sale, is a myth.

Unless you want to book a flight with Southwest Airlines.

Because from August 21 until August 24, Southwest is having an end of summer sale with flights starting at $49.

Travel dates for domestic flights are available from September 5 to February 14, and for international flights from September 12 to December 13, and January 9 to March 1.

Travelers who want to get out of town during historically quiet travel times (particularly September and October, and between Thanksgiving and December) will enjoy thin crowds and more availability.

From the New York City area, there are $50 flights to Fort Lauderdale, Florida — and from here, there are a number of excellent warm-weather destinations for fall and winter fliers.
