    As director of a program that promotes sea turtle watching in the wild as a way to promote conservation efforts, I agree with the folks who don't think swimming with dolphins in captivity is a good idea. While I agree that the people in these programs probably end up with a stronger connection to dolphins, the activity itself does not promote conservation in any way or teach people about what a wild dolphin is.

    There are lots of alternatives to captive swimming with the dolphin programs. I suggest travelers look for programs like those of Link or other conservation organizations where people can participate in scientific research. At the very least, research programs where you can see dolphins in the wild to make sure the operator is following strict rules to protect the dolphins from injury and stress.
