We enjoyed an unexpectedly private tour and afternoon port tasting at the Taylor-Fladgate port house in Porto, just by virtue of the off-season. The tour was fascinating and covered the history and culture of port and then we were led into a room with a crackling fireplace and a tray of bottles and glasses set out before a sofa, with a wall of windows overlooking the city and the Douro. It was pretty dreamy. (And had its desired effect: I still order a glass of Taylor-Fladgate port, given the choice!)
