What to do, where to stay, and where to eat in San Francisco

Forget the tourists-only zone of Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39; it’s the rest of San Francisco that begs exploration. The city’s 40-odd square miles encompass showy Victorian houses, sleek Art Deco skyscrapers, and the sprawling, verdant oasis of Golden Gate Park; the funky neighborhoods are filled with museums and galleries, independent bookstores, free-trade coffee shops, and indie-designer ateliers. Oh, and restaurants where everyone’s wearing jeans—but where the food (much of it made with sustainable, local ingredients) is simply sublime.
