The City of Angels evokes images that are both glamorous (idyllic beaches, glitzy Hollywood galas) and excessive (smog, traffic, spoiled starlets), and both are legitimate. But this complex metropolis, whose culture is infused by its seaside locale, Mediterranean climate, Asian and Latin American populations—and of course, its entertainment industry—is never boring. Yes, L.A. can be maddeningly superficial and a city planner’s nightmare, but even a single day can turn you on to the city’s charms: surfing Malibu in the morning, lunching at Lucques, shopping Rodeo Drive, catching a sunset at the Getty Center, and finally, partying beneath the stars on a rooftop lounge.
