Wake Up with Al: Weekend Getaways from Philadelphia
Travel + Leisure’s Sarah Spagnolo shares three ideas for getaways in and around the City of Brotherly Love.
Philadelphia has long been known for its historic monuments such as the Liberty Bell, but you might not know that it’s also home to one of America’s best burgers: Charlie’s Hamburger in Folsom, near the airport, tops its patties with finely diced onions that are melted down right on the grill. Stay at the Independent Hotel in Philadelphia’s Midtown Village for complimentary Wi-Fi, breakfast, and a weekday wine and cheese hour.

2. Cape May, New Jersey
Cape May is the antithesis of what you might imagine of when you consider the Jersey Shore. It’s all Victorian architectural perfection, with crape myrtles sprouting from sidewalks and American-flag bunting, and a pedestrian friendly downtown. The Star hotel is ideal for families (ask for a room with a kitchenette); head to the beach for cabana service and a smoothie.

3. Milford, Pennsylvania
By the mid 19th century, Milford had become well established as a high-end summer resort town, and it’s popular again today thanks to the renovated Hotel Fauchère, named for the property’s founder, who was also the pioneering chef of Manhattan’s Delmonico’s restaurant. The 16 rooms have heated floors, Frette linens, and rainfall showerheads. Save time for the quaint bookstores and antiques shops nearby.
