Dying to leave your coat, scarf, and hat behind? February is an ideal month for a winter escape, especially for those of us on the East Coast, where snow still covers the sidewalks. Here are a couple great ideas at two price points, so you can decide whether now’s the time for a splurge or a steal.
First up, Santa Fe, where I spent a chilly but glorious winter weekend a few years ago (see my blog post here). For my steal, I chose the pueblo-style Inn and Spa at Loretto, and as my splurge, Encantado, an Auberge Resort, which was listed on T+L’s It List in 2009. My ideal Encantado afternoon: a desert hike on the hotel’s 57-acre property before an ayurvedic massage and a spot on a lounge chair as the sun sets over the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. Ahh, to be on vacation.
Of course you can't say "vacation" in February without thinking "beach." Vieques, voted one of the top islands in the Caribbean by Travel + Leisure readers two years ago, is an ideal choice is if you’re looking for warm weather; perhaps that’s the reason Starwood chose a secluded spot on the Puerto Rican island for its first W Retreat & Spa in North America, the W Vieques. For a more affordable option with a different laidback beach vibe, Jamaica is always a hit. This month, the 40-room bohemian-chic Jake’s Island Outpost is offering nights starting at $115. My obsession is the hotel’s remote bar on a sandbar, only accessible by boat. Sign me up!
