Remember that scene in Heartbreakers, when Sigourney Weaver’s con artist character staged a dramatic fall for Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character in the marble-decked lobby of an über fancy hotel, all for the sake of getting a sweet suite at the hotel, free of charge? Funny as that was, there are other—and much more legal—ways to get a free upgrade at a hotel. There are hotel reward programs. Or, for those who like to have a little fun, just sing a song!
Book a stay at select Joie de Vivre Hotels properties anytime from now until September 30, and you can sing your way to a free upgrade. How does it work? Four of the hotel chain’s properties—Shorebreak Hotel in Huntington Beach; Pacific Edge Hotel on Laguna Beach; Hotel Erwin in Venice Beach; and Hotel Angeleno in Los Angeles—will have a pre-selected song that fits its style, and upon check-in, anyone who opts to sing in a very public forum has a chance for a free upgrade. I say chance because there’s a slight caveat: you have to be the first person of the day to perform in order to get the upgrade. (And no, you don’t actually have to sing well to win. You just have to sing.)
Oh right, and your entire performance will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube and Facebook—and with any luck, depending on how you look at it, go viral. Here, the public will vote for their favorite performances. In October, the video with the most votes will be given the grand prize: a two-night stay at each of the four properties!
If you happen to miss your chance to be the first to sing on the day you check-in, fret not: you can still sing and be entered for a chance to win the grand prize.
So what are you waiting for? Warm up those pipes, practice your favorite aria, refrain from drinking milk the morning of check-in, and get singing!
