What do a thirsty pair of hopeful immigrants in Juarez, a mime in Bisbee, and a man hanging out on the steps of a motel in Tuscon all have in common? Don't stress, this isn't a joke or trick question. . .
Their images were all captured by five Magnum photographers on the Postcards From America road trip as they drove an RV from San Antonio to Oakland from May 12-26, documenting the American landscape and the characters they encountered along the way.
With their two-week long road trip wrapping up this week, photographers Paolo Pellegrin, Jim Goldberg, Susan Meiselas, Alec Soth, Mikhael Subotzky and writer Ginger Strand are preparing for their pop-up show, which opens on Thursday, May 26 at The Starline Social Club in Oakland. Those in the Bay Area can also check out their show on Friday and Saturday, May 27-28, from noon-6 pm.
For art appreciators and collectors, a signed, limited edition book ($250) and a five-print portfolio ($3000) will be published after the trip and can be pre-ordered here. A set of five postcards ($125) sent from the road by the photographers was also available, but those sold out quickly. But no worries, you can still look through their “postcards” on their blog and be sure to bookmark it. Their Southwestern trip is just the first of these journeys through America. Though the time and place of the next trip isn't finalized, the people over at Magnum are already hatching new plans. Stay tuned for more.
