Get Boulud in Bed
T+L got a sneak peak at the Surrey Hotel, one of New York City’s newest renovations that's been gutted and reimagined and is scheduled to reopen this fall on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. And while right now we’re reliant on artist renderings, it seems like the Surrey will be injecting some (dare we say) trendiness into the UES.
The “antique rug” in the lobby? Actually a mosaic. The piece of video art you see as you check in? A William Kentridge. The drink recipe written on that chaise lounge? It didn't get there by accident. And forget any flowery formality in the 190 spacious rooms; instead, they feature clean lines and muted tones (without, fortunately, any uncomfortabe modern furniture).
But the Surrey doesn’t stray too far from its more formal East Side roots. The bar has banquettes with walls quilted like a Chanel bag. And the gorgeous outdoor roof space will become an English garden, complete with butler service.
Perhaps the singular highlight of the hotel, though, is that you won’t need to leave the building—or your room—to enjoy a meal from Daniel Boulud. With a phone call, you'll be able to order up something from the Michelin-starred Café Boulud, which sits just off the lobby.
