New and renovated hotels are opening across the country, from quintessential Northeast towns like Nantucket, Massachusetts and Newport, Rhode Island, to Lake Tahoe, California—just in time for your last summer getaway.
After a head-to-toe transformation, this 1717 building is now a charming, 11-room boutique hotel (and sister property to nearby The Veranda House). The self-described “retro-chic” rooms feature splashes of turquoise and red, and amusing needlepoint pillows (adorned with “lust,” “gluttony,” and other deadly sins).
Nantucket’s celebrated White Elephant hotel (one of America’s Best Coastal Hotels) will soon debut its latest addition, a 14-suite, six-room property decorated in neutral, beach-y tones by local designer Kathleen Hay. It’s all part of the new White Elephant Village, whose lobby offers snacks all day, including pastries in the morning and port and cheese in the afternoon.
Newport, Rhode Island
Complimentary treats can also be found at this renovated 1910 property, walking distance from the beach and the Cliff Walk. (Homemade Oreos and cheddar-scallion scones, anyone?) Each of the 12 rooms and suites is outfitted in bright pops of color, as well as gas-burning fireplaces and Vineyard Vines canvas beach bags.
South Lake Tahoe, California
Adventure-seekers will feel right at home at this affordable, playful 50-room hotel, which was built as a place for like-minded people to mix and mingle (and there’s an inviting lobby, plus communal dinners to help make it happen). Lake Tahoe is a five-minute walk away, and the Heavenly Gondola is even closer. For a real camp-like experience, book one of the rooms with two queens and two bunk beds.
Montauk, New York
Rooms at this stylish 33-room property—which beckons with a Pepto Bismol-colored sign—are light-filled and fresh, decorated with everything from cast-iron beds and claw-foot tubs to velvet-covered bean bag chairs. Guests have access to the hotel’s private beach club, Number 50, which hosts live music, DJs, fashion shows, and art events, plus a pop-up shop from Minnie Rose. The best part? It’s open for an extended season, until Nov. 1.
The muted, cream-hued rooms at the newest Kennebunkport Resort Collection hotel aren’t vibrant and eclectic like others on this list, but they sure look relaxing. With an on-site spa and Grand Kitchen restaurant, you could spend all day on the property—but guests itching to explore can take advantage of the amenities available at three sister properties, such as kayaks, rowboats, and beach cruiser bikes.
The quintessential Northeast beach getaway of Nantucket is having a moment, with three new or renovated properties opening this summer. One of them is this family-owned resort, formerly the Point Breeze Hotel. Amenities include a rooftop, ocean-view lounge and a complimentary children’s program. (And, yes, that is a moving, mechanical sperm whale in the lobby.) Read our full coverage.
