The Northern Lights are a stunning spectacle even from land, but professional surfer Mick Fanning recently got to experience them while catching some waves in Norway. According to a blog post on Red Bull's website, Fanning decided to forgo surfing contests this year for the opportunity to surf in some of the world's most beautiful places.

Norwegian photographers Emil Sollie and Mats Grimsæth tagged along to shoot the experience—something they'd been looking to do since they met in 2014, according to the blog post.

“To shoot a picture of surfing under the Northern Lights, there are so many elements that have to come together at the same time,” Sollie told Red Bull. “Technically, this is one of the hardest pictures to capture.”

The wait was worth it, judging by the photos and video of the experience.

The group waited days before the elusive light show made an appearance around midnight on the third day of the adventure.

“You can imagine, half asleep, jumping in a wetsuit, and then just being wowed by all this stuff. It's something I'll remember forever,” Fanning said.

The video above is an interview with SurferToday.com on the experience, and there's also the video Red Bull, Fanning's sponsor, put together:
