Russia: Polar Bears

According to Polar Bears International, Russia’s had 19 fatal polar bear attacks since records were kept over the last hundred years, followed by Canada with 7, and the United States with 2. When the cuddly-looking bears do strike, they are often hungry—and extremely aggressive.

Survival Tip: Make lots of noise to deter the bear. If that doesn’t work, lie down, cover your face, and play dead.

Safe Spotting: Churchill, Manitoba, in Canada, is the Polar Bear Capital of the World, with local outfitters offering eco-minded and up-close Tundra Buggy bear tours. The safest way to see the cold-weather creatures is from a boat, such as the Hurtigruten Polar Bear Cruise near Spitsbergen, Norway. Bear sightings are announced over the onboard PA system, and two daily Zodiac boat landings give ample opportunity to see one on shore…with an armed tour guide.
