Less than 18 months after Hurricane Katrina, much of New Orleans is back and ready for visitors. Revamped favorites and interesting newcomers are contributing to the second act of one of America’s favorite cities. The Ritz-Carlton (921 Canal St.; 800/241-3333; www.ritzcarlton.com; doubles from $419) reopened in December; next month, International House (221 Camp St.; 800/633-5770; www.ihhotel.com; doubles from $159) reveals its extensive makeover at the hands of designer L. M. Pagano. In the Warehouse and Arts District, Cajun-country native chef Donald Link is dishing up Southern fare at a new outpost, Cochon (930 Tchoupitoulas St.; 504/588-2123; www.cochonrestaurant.com; dinner for two $35). Finally, for travelers who want to play a more direct part in the Crescent City’s renaissance, "voluntourism" opportunities abound, including those from the Musicians’ Village in the Ninth Ward, a partnership with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for displaced musicians and their families. Check back at travelandleisure.com throughout the year for a list of ways to help and for the latest openings—and reopenings—in New Orleans.
