And Now a Word from Tony's Mother...

Even though she's never stood atop any sort of board, Nancy Hawk is the meanest 80-year-old bodysurfer in SoCal. A retired business professor at a community college, she devotes her time to charities and hanging out with her grandkids. We asked her to tell us about their favorite places to go: Kit Carson Park (3333 Bear Valley Pkwy., Escondido; 760/839-4691; www.escondido.org). "I adore Niki de Saint Phalle's sculpture garden, with her giant mosaic creatures. It's so imaginative—and it captivates the children, especially Spencer, who's very artistic. There are also trails and ponds and even a skate park, something I wish they'd had at parks when Tony was a kid." SeaWorld (500 SeaWorld Dr., San Diego;800/380-3203; www.seaworld.com). "I love it when the trainers dive off Shamu's back. And the kids always like feeding the sea lions. Oh, the anemones—the way they move is so fascinating." Hotel del Coronado (1500 Orange Ave., Coronado; 800/468-3533 or 619/435-6611; www.hoteldel.com; doubles from $310). "I lived on Coronado Island when they were filming Some Like It Hot—yes, right at the hotel. I love the Sheerwater at the Del; they have a kids' menu with brownie sundaes. And the beach...it's beautiful, one of the best in San Diego."
