T+L Reports: Zurich’s Shipping News

Like this article?

Brothers Markus and Daniel Freitag got the inspiration for their cult messenger bags—crafted from truck tarpaulins, car seat belts, and tire inner tubes—by watching 10,000 trucks a day whiz by their apartment near Switzerland’s high-speed transit route. Thirteen years later, they’re paying homage to their hometown with Freitag Shop Zurich (17 Geroldstrasse; 41-43/366-9520; www.freitag.ch), an industrial-size emporium that owes its existence to a different sort of traffic: the four-story depot is built entirely from used shipping containers. Peruse the utilitarian-chic displays—the brothers custom-designed all the furniture as well as the more than 1,600 bags—and admire Zurich’s skyline from the rooftop viewing platform. Through a telescope, you can watch 18-wheelers speeding past the brothers’ old apartment, just 300 yards away.
