T+L Reports: Oh My Omaha

Frank Gehry's swooping Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles isn't the only new American auditorium that lets the sun shine in. At the $92 million Holland Performing Arts Center (13th and Douglas Sts.; 402/345-0606; www.omahaperformingarts.org), which opened this fall in Omaha, a grand glass stairway inks the ground- floor lobby and semi-enclosed outdoor performance courtyard to an upstairs recital hall and 2,000-seat main auditorium. In that grand space, New York–based Polshek Partnership Architects used Nebraska sycamore to offset the cream-colored wall panels of hand-molded plaster. Higher up, clear- and frosted-glass clerestory windows grab the last bit of twilight as evening concerts begin. Offerings this month include soprano Renée Fleming (Dec. 1), Baroque holiday music (Dec. 10), and New Year's Eve with Marvin Hamlisch. —CRAIG KELLOGG
