T+L Reports: Japanese Club Mix

Like this article?

The latest design from Habitat creative director Tom Dixon: Tokyo Hipsters Club (6-12-23 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; 81-3/5778-2081; www.tokyohipstersclub.com) is a cavernous, three-story concept store in the retail mecca of Harajuku. A self-described "non-architect," Dixon conceived every last aesthetic detail, right down to the bathroom fixtures. The warehouse-style interior is appointed with cast-offs from British gentlemen's clubs (think moose antlers and burnished-leather couches). Much of what's for sale riffs on 1960's counterculture: Pick up a first edition of Allen Ginsberg's poems, then nab one of the Che-emblazoned penknives; or try on a pair of pants from the store's own women's line, christened Mai 1968 in honor of the student-led riots in Paris. On your way out, grab the Club's compilation CD, featuring Johnny Thunders, Iggy Pop, and the Damned.
