Most certainly, I would spend some time in Bellagio, Italy, on Lake Como. What could be better than dining alfresco on the region's best food under rows of lime trees, and gazing at the aquamarine lake while sipping Chianti? It's heaven.
Hands down, I'd visit Stonehenge. It's still one of the greatest mysteries of all time. The circle is awe-inspiring, especially when you compare the size of the stones with the humans who transported them.
Bern, Switzerland, is a hidden jewel. My husband and I recently visited out of curiosity because my father's family came from there. I had no idea what to expect, but it turned out to be the sleeper hit of our entire trip, which was mostly in Bavaria. The panoramic views from the Rose Garden on the river Aare, the cobblestoned streets of the Altstadt, and the art galleries along Kramgasse were amazing.
The Woodlands, Tex.
A must for me is Mombasa, Kenya. I dream of the white-sand beaches, the warm Indian Ocean, feasts of ginger-soaked crabs, tribal music at night, and chants from the mosques in the morning. It's a perfect blend of the past and present, East and West, the exotic and the luxurious.
Fort Worth, Tex.
My choice would be Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. The city's modern buildings tower over small markets, palm-edged boulevards, and Dubai Creek, lined with dhows. The intense aromas of saffron and cinnamon lure you to the souks. At dusk, the glow of the gold markets is visible from quite a distance.
Terrace, B.C., Canada
The exuberant mountain village of Zakopane, Poland, is a town for hikers and skiers, surrounded by pine forests, with the Tatra Mountains as a backdrop. It is, in fact, the pope's favorite place, and he's been just about everywhere.
