We love to drive through upstate New York on our way to Lake Placid in the Adirondacks. We always stay at the Lake Placid Lodge, a small rustic hotel overlooking the water. It's so peaceful there.

The greatest show on earth is fall in New Hampshire. The air is crisp and the trees glow with color. We stayed at the Inn at Bay Point in Meredith, on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Mystic, Connecticut, is well worth the 10-hour drive for us. After the long ride, we're rewarded with breathtaking views of the seaport and lush, brilliant foliage. And no autumn visit to Mystic is complete without a scallop roll at Kitchen Little.

Hands down, it has to be the north shore of Lake Superior from Duluth to Grand Portage, Minnesota. The colors are riotous: the maples' red leaves, the gold of the aspens, the crystal-clear blue of the lake. My favorite stopover is the Stone Hearth Inn, at the halfway point, in Little Marais.

We live in New York's Hudson River valley, which must have the most beautiful fall foliage in the country. Our favorite family drive, usually on Columbus Day weekend, is up the Taconic State Parkway toward the Berkshires. We pick apples at Greig Farm in Red Hook, have lunch at the 1776 Beekman Tavern, a restaurant in Rhinebeck, and spend the night at the Candlelight Inn in Lenox, Massachusetts.

My favorite fall drive is across Tioga Pass in Yosemite National Park. After a night at the Ahwahnee lodge, you can take an eerily quiet morning trip through the park. The leaves are spectacular, and sometimes you'll even see snow on the highest peaks.

Spring Green, Wisconsin, is the most amazing place I've ever seen in the fall-its rolling hills are like a watercolor painting. The House on the Rock has a room that juts out over the treetops, giving a bird's-eye view.
