T+L Asks: Readers' Answers to Romance Survey

Like this article?

In December, we asked for your opinions on romance and travel. Here's what turns you on:

What's the most romantic place you've ever visited?
1. Paris
2. Venice
3. Hawaii
4. Bora-Bora
5. Bermuda

The most romantic hotel you've ever stayed at?
1. Ojai Valley Inn & Spa, California
2. Château Frontenac, Quebec City
3. Hôtel de Crillon, Paris
4. Mount Kenya Safari Club, Kenya

Almost 90 percent of you said the view is key. A luxurious bathtub came in second.

New York City's Tavern on the Green came out on top as most romantic restaurant. Runners-up include Dallas's Mansion on Turtle Creek, the Box Tree in New York City, Las Brisas in Acapulco, the Ahwahnee in Yosemite National Park, Philadelphia's Le Bec-Fin, and La Tour d'Argent, Paris.

Sixty percent of you like getting dressed up for dinner.
Twenty-one percent would rather dine barefoot.

Are there any foods you consider an aphrodisiac?
Seventy-four percent said yes, definitely. The hot tickets:
1. chocolate
2. champagne
3. oysters

Some less predictable delights: cassis sorbet, tequila, olives, sushi, pomegranates, caviar, risotto, and artichokes.

Thirty percent of you popped the question -- or answered it -- on a trip.
Proposing while afloat seems to work best, "on a gondola in Venice," "in a rowboat on a lake in the Poconos," or "on a cruise ship at the captain's table with all the waiters yelling 'Say yes!'"

Nearly 50 percent of those who responded met "the one" -- or something like it -- while traveling.
And many of you had a great story to tell:
"I met my husband in Kashmir. He's Scottish; I'm French."
"I met my first wife. Obviously the trip wasn't long enough."
"We met during spring break in Zihuatanejo -- and returned for our honeymoon!"
"Absolutely I met the one -- Jeremy Irons!"
"I met my husband at Hedonism in Jamaica. It was on a nude cruise, and we were the only ones with clothes on."

The old desert-island question: Whom would you take along?
Spouse/significant other: 75%
Someone else: 17%

A few of the candidates for that "someone else": Elvis Costello, Sylvia Plath, Barney, Placido Domingo, "Pierce Brosnan and my dog," "my wife, or Tina Turner, or a very good cribbage player -- either sex," and "Ralph Fiennes -- he's not great at rescuing damsels in distress, but he looks gorgeous in a desert."
