How to Score the Lowest Hotel Rates

Return to main article

IF YOU'RE NOT SURE WHERE TO STAY, start on-line with Orbitz, Travelocity, and Expedia. But compare their prices with the hotel's own Web site. Chains like Starwood, Ramada, and Wyndham offer guaranteed low rates on-line. The catch: some of those rates are prepaid, with no refund if you cancel.

YOU MAY NEED TO CALL THE HOTEL—to book adjoining rooms, say. Usually, we've found the better rate through the toll-free number (rather than from the hotel directly). Inquire about promotions, such as a free second room.

AVID TRAVELERS SHOULD JOIN A CHAIN'S FREQUENT-STAY PROGRAM, which lets members redeem points for free rooms, upgrades, and meal discounts.

HAVE EXTRA FREQUENT-FLIER MILES? You can transfer them to some hotel programs—American Airlines miles to Hilton points, for one.
