The Top Ten College Courses

6. Jimmie Austin University of Oklahoma Golf Course, Norman, OK
Architects: Perry and Press Maxwell, 1951; Bob Cupp, 1996. Yardage/Slope: 7,197/134. Green Fees: $33-$62. Tee Times: 405-325-6716. Tilting, heavily bunkered fairways and puny, mounded greens abound. Mature oaks, elms and pines dictate strategy on at least a dozen holes.

7. University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course, Albuquerque, NM
Architect: Red Lawrence, 1966. Yardage/Slope: 7,248/134. Green Fees: $26-$67. Tee Times: 505-277-4546. A wonderful mix of rolling hills, ponds, cottonwoods and desert, UNM has hosted four NCAA Championships. The enormous fast greens average 8,500 square feet each.

8. Kampen Course, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN
Architect: Pete Dye, 1998. Yardage/Slope: 7,272/145. Green Fees: $48-$55. Tee Times: 765-496-3844. Not as penal as Dye's usual fare, this pot- and waste-bunkered links-style beauty rolls through and around ponds and protected wetlands, offering sweeping vistas from most tee boxes.

9. Taconic Golf Course, Williams College, Williamstown, MA
Architects: Wayne Stiles, John Van Kleek, 1927. Yardage/Slope: 6,614/127. Green Fees: $48; $140 unaccompanied. Tee Times: 413-458-3997. This stunning layout with views of Mount Greylock and the Berkshires features lots of bunkers and slick, challenging greens.

10. Colbert Hills Golf Course, Kansas State, Manhattan, KS
Architect: Jeff Brauer, 2000. Yardage/Slope: 7,525/152. Green Fees: $59-$79. Tee Times: 785-776-6475. Alum Jim Colbert ('53) had this course sodded, not seeded, creating one lush track. Staggering length, bunkers (106 in all) and wind make it a freshman prodigy.
