T+L Reports: The Loews Down

As chairman of both the Loews Hotels chain and the official tourism marketing bureau of New York City, NYC & Co., Jonathan Tisch is often cited as one of the nation's foremost experts on the travel industry. In his first book, The Power of We: Succeeding Through Partnerships (John Wiley & Sons), Tisch looks back at a lifetime on the road. Here he shares some secrets of his success.

SCOUTING FOR TRENDS "Staying in my competitors' hotels is a great way to get ideas about what might work for Loews. A chain like W, for example, is cleverly positioned in all the right places."

INSIDE DISH "I eat out every night in New York. My favorite restaurant is Jean-Georges Vongerichten's V SteakHouse [10 Columbus Circle; 212/823-9500; dinner for two $130], in the Time Warner Center. Another top spot is Blue Ribbon [97 Sullivan St.; 212/274-0404; dinner for two $95], in SoHo."

INSPIRATION "I've always said that if I hadn't ended up in hotels I'd have been an architect. I love looking at design and space—especially in a place like South Beach, which has done such a great job of preserving its historic landmarks."
