Alabama's Golf Renaissance

RTJ Trail Accommodations
At just about every turn on the Trail, travelers can find a fine place to stay. And in areas lacking anything spectacular, the Trail has arranged for accommodations to be built--the Legends at Capitol Hill in Prattville opened in 2000, and the hotel at the Grand National site in Opelika will open this fall.

AUBURN UNIVERSITY HOTEL
241 South College Street, Auburn; 800-228-2876. Rooms: $79$99. Suites: $179$199.
The University Hotel is pretty standard fare for a large hotel, but it is located in the middle of downtown Auburn, which allows you to soak up some campus atmosphere. There are 248 rooms, which are newly appointed and large, a bar area and a fitness center. The Grand National courses are a fifteen-minute drive from town.

THE LEGENDS AT CAPITOL HILL
2500 Legends Circle, Prattville; 888-250-3767. Rooms: $119$189. Villas: $2,000.
The wood and stone interior presents a very rustic feel (despite its recent construction) and, along with seventy-four tasteful rooms, there are two eight-room villas, which are perfect for groups. The homey bar (complete with stone fireplace) and dining facilities alleviate any need to leave. The hotel looks out on the beautiful Senator course.

MARRIOTT'S GRAND HOTEL
One Grand Boulevard, Point Clear; 800-544-9933. Rooms: $109$189. Suites: $179$279.
This 150-year-old resort is located on the eastern side of the Mobile Bay and about a thirty-minute drive from the Magnolia Grove courses. The site has changed quite a bit since beginning as a small hotel in 1847; now it is a 278-room, twenty-one-suite facility with 22,000 square feet of conference space, tennis courts, two Perry Maxwell golf courses, and, coming in May, a 20,000-square-foot European Spa and more than 100 new rooms (both part of a $30 million renovation).

THE TUTWILER
2021 Park Place North, Birmingham; 205-322-2100. Rooms: $59$200. Suites: $420$600.
This Wyndham Historic Hotel is a charming red-brick lodging in the center of downtown Birmingham. It features 147 luxury rooms, fifty-two suites, a lounge and a restaurant, all with a lot of personality. And it is only a ten-minute drive to Oxmoor Valley.

THE VICTORIA
1604 Quintard Avenue, Anniston; 256-236-0503. Rooms: $79$169. Guest House: $199$219.
This privately owned inn was built in 1887 as a residence and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a beautiful example of Queen Anne Victorian architecture in the heart of Anniston. There are three rooms inside the main house, each decorated to a different period of the house's lifetime, a guest house and fifty-six hotel rooms in back.
