This month, Connecticut's Westport Country Playhouse (25 Powers Court; 203/227-4177; www.westportplayhouse.org) celebrates its 75th anniversary, the $18 million renovation of its landmark space (an 1820's red barn), and a stellar summer season. The company's artistic director, actress Joanne Woodward, stages Carson McCullers's Member of the Wedding (through Aug. 14). This coming-of-age tale is set in a small town in Georgia—Woodward's home state. Also on the bill is Journey's End (Aug. 18Sept. 4), a drama by R. C. Sherriff, based on the playwright's experiences in World War I.
