What travel insurance can—and can't—cover

The 2004 Atlantic hurricane season was a reminder that buying travelers' insurance is the only way to guarantee a refund for delays, cancellations, and interruptions caused by severe weather. But you must purchase the plan before the storm is forecast—if you want to cancel because of an approaching storm, insurance will not cover you. Instead, call your hotel to discuss options; most try to be accommodating.
