Starck-Designed Apartments

Philippe Starck wants to decorate your apartment—as long as you live in one of his ICON buildings, which he designed with Siger Suarez & Fullerton Diaz Architects. Last year, the concept—finished apartments with layouts personally selected by Starck—was introduced in London and Melbourne to critical acclaim. This month, sales begin for America's first ICON building, which will rise 40 stories above the Miami Beach waterfront, with commanding views of downtown and Biscayne Bay. Starck has devised four schemes: Nature (light and airy), Classic (tailored and European), Culture (colorful baroque touches), and Minimal (sleek and neutral). As permanent residences or vacation homes, the prefabs offer people "the freedom, flexibility, and simplicity to create their own fantasy," Starck says. Scheduled for completion in 2005, ICON has nine floor plans, including one-bedroom apartments ($400,000) and four-bedroom penthouses ($2 million). Starck furniture not included.
